If You or Your Spouse Have Been in the Armed Services You May Get Special Benefits When Applying for a State Job
Maine gives benefits to some former members of the armed services and their spouses. You can get these if you are a veteran, or if your spouse was a veteran and has passed away.
If you get these benefits and you meet the minimum requirements for a classified service job, then you must get an interview. Most state jobs are "classified" civil service jobs.
Those Who Get Hiring Preferences Also Get Protection When There Are Job Layoffs
If you are a state worker and received preference because you are a veteran or family member, then you also get protection when there are job layoffs. You get to keep your job over all other workers who have the same job classification and have the same seniority, status and service ratings.
Maine's law is Title 5 MRSA §7054-B and can be found online.
